Coach Brian Bechtel
Coach Bechtel is in his 18th year as a teacher and coach. He graduated in 1989 from Fairfield High School and in 1994 from Bethel College. Coach received his masters degree in Secondary Education in 2002 from IPFW and his Career and Technical Education License from Indiana State University in 2006.
Coach Bechtel currently serves as the Cooperative Education Coordinator at GHS. He runs both the I.C.E. and Internship programs so he is very involved with local businesses in the community.
His first coaching job was at Concord as the freshmen coach. He then moved to the J.V. position for two years, before moving to Garrett High School where he was the varsity head coach for two seasons. Coach Bechtel is in his 13th year as the head coach of the Redskins where he has led the program to their only NLC championship (2003). Coach Bechtel is in his fourth year serving on the board of directors for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Associaion.
Coach Bechtel enjoys reading leadership books. Some of his favorites are: Leading From the Heart, by Mike Kryzewski; Lead for God’s Sake, by Todd Gongwer; It’s Your Ship: ManagementTechniques from the Best Damn Ship in the Navy, by D. Michael Abrashoff; Outliers, by Malcolm Gladwell; and lastly Good to Great, by Jim Collins. Coach also enjoys watching his children participate in youth sports and fishing on Syracuse Lake.
Coach Bechtel has been married to Carrie (Nelson) Bechtel for 16 years and they have three children: Brady (14), Brooke (12), and Quinn (7). They attend River Oaks Community Church and enjoy vacationing in their spare time. Most recently they spent two weeks on a western tour in an R.V. Another favorite activity is to attend one Colts game per year.
